1,000+ servers

plus storage and network hardware, moved over 700 miles in a single weekend.

National Healthcare Provider

30 hours

to fly 400 servers and devices 1,600 miles and re-install them. The estimate was 48.

National entertainment & hospitality corporation

8 hours

for the physical move of 200 servers and devices over a holiday weekend. The estimate was 12.

Our four-phase data center relocation process

We break every project into steps so no vital task is missed. At every stage, risk assessment and a contingency plan are at the forefront.

  1. Requirements gathering

We document your Present Method of Operation: a detailed inventory, Visio drawings, the physical network infrastructure and the logical application links for every device.

  2. Design planning

Together we define the Desired Future State and the roadmap to reach it, including net new equipment, telecommunications changes and the network design.

  3. Implementation planning

Rack layouts, cable plans, and a Day of Move plan with tasks, owners and prerequisites, split into move groups to reduce downtime and limit risk.

  4. Execution

Two-person teams de-install, pack, move and re-install. A second team double-checks the cabling before handing devices to your team for testing.

Your equipment is never out of sight or off the list

Before any device is moved, it's tested for points of failure and your data is backed up. In transit, every device is secured against loss, damage or theft.

  • GPS traceability. State-of-the-art transport vehicles you can track.
  • Device-level tracking. Devices tracked by inventory number at de-installation, relocation and re-installation.
  • Compliance. FACTA, HIPAA, HITECH and GLBA compliance.
  • Insurance. Some of the industry's highest insurance coverages.

Finished ahead of schedule

Two relocations, start to finish: what was asked, how we planned it, and what we'd do even better next time. Across the two moves MIGRA has published in full, the physical work took 38 of 60 planned hours, finishing 37% faster than planned. See the record.

Data center relocation questions

What is data center relocation?

Data center relocation is the physical move of servers, storage and network equipment from one facility to another, including planning, de-racking, packing, secure transport, re-racking, cabling and testing. MIGRA Systems has specialized in it since 2004.

How much does it cost to move a data center?

Every data center move is quoted individually. The main cost drivers are the number of devices, the distance and transport mode, the move window, the services needed (racking, packing, cabling, project management) and site conditions such as union labor or elevator access. MIGRA's first consultation is free, with no obligation.

How long does a data center move take?

It depends on size and planning. MIGRA has moved 200 devices for a bank in 8 hours against a 12-hour window, 400 devices 1,600 miles in 30 hours against a 48-hour estimate, and 1,000+ servers 700 miles over a single weekend.

How is equipment kept safe during a data center move?

MIGRA tracks every device by inventory number from de-installation to re-installation, labels it with a Device Spec Sheet showing its destination rack and U position, and moves it in GPS-traceable vehicles. MIGRA supports FACTA, HIPAA, HITECH and GLBA compliance.

Does MIGRA move data centers outside North Carolina?

Yes. MIGRA Systems is based in Charlotte, North Carolina, and relocates data centers nationally and internationally, by truck or, for long distances on tight windows, by chartered cargo plane.
